Podiatry toe nail surgery videos reduce staff time

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust

Historically patients were seen in clinic for pre-assessment and consenting, and after the procedure patients needed another appointment to explain how to redress the toe, what is normal in recovery and what to look out for. They were then given an information leaflet to take home.

The department often received phone calls from patients after these appointments.

Intervention:

HCI worked with the podiatry team to create a number of videos that could be used as part of the consenting and follow up process. The videos are then accessed by patients in the following ways:

  • A QR card with a link to the video(s) so that they can watch at home is given at the appointment
  • During surgery the video about dressing the toe and what to expect after surgery is shown on a tablet
  • Posters and stickers are displayed in the reception area

Impact:

  • Podiatry appointments have been shortened by 25% (10 mins)
  • 4 minutes saved with every toe nail surgery
  • Reduction in the number of calls post surgery to podiatry team
  • Reduces patients anxiety and aids decision making

From our point of view, it is really helpful to back up written and verbal advice with the videos as we feel there is more chance of information being absorbed. They are a great resource to be able to recommend to patients and their carers.” Su Stewart, Advanced Podiatrist
